Traffic Flow Changes at PIA Starting Monday
Sep 11, 2015
Peoria, IL -- Beginning Monday, the main entrance road to the Peoria International Airport will reopen along Everett McKinley Dirksen Parkway, as construction around the terminal enters the final two phases.
But travelers and visitors are still advised to build in extra travel time as lane reductions and temporary new entrances and exits to the main and premier parking lots will be in effect until construction is complete, expected by mid-October.
Most notably, the entrance to the main parking lot will be past the terminal on the far east side of the lot, near Byerly Aviation.
"It may be confusing at first to drive past the terminal to enter the parking lot, but our travelers have been very good about patiently handling these changes. We also have worked very hard to use barricades and signage to guide everyone," said Gene Olson, Director of Airports. "These roads were in dire need of repair. We're happy to note that things should be back to normal in a month or so."
This project includes expanding the main parking lot to add another 250 parking spaces, but that work is not expected to be completed until later. Additional capacity is needed as the Airport saw its busiest month ever in July, and two new gates will open next spring in the new International terminal. That building, connected to the main terminal, will allow for continued growth of the Airport's domestic service, as well as allow airlines to introduce international travel.
Englarged, detailed maps of both construction phases, along with timelines, are here: Phase III of Airport road construction and Final Phase of Airport road construction.
