PIA sets new February record, fills parking lot to capacity
Mar 12, 2019
PEORIA, IL -- A record 49,094 passengers traveled through the Gen. Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport in February, up 3.6 percent from the previous February record of 47,385 passengers in 2017.
Meanwhile, March traffic is also strong, with the main parking lot filled to capacity even in advance of the majority of Spring Break travel.
"We're asking travelers to give themselves a little extra time to find parking," Director of Airports Gene Olson. "We started directing people to our overflow lot on Monday, and now that's full. We do have an emergency parking plan, including using a lot near the control tower and allowing parking along our roadways if need be."
While the airport has more than 3,300 parking spaces in the main and overflow parking lots, Olson said the airport may have to look at adding even more in the near future.
"We had seven record months in 2018 and ended up setting an all-time record for the year. People choose us because we're a stress-free option close to home, and they appreciate the free parking. Central Illinois is supporting us in record numbers, and we want to reward that."
While Spring Break travel has started, Olson noted that several schools, including Bradley University and Peoria and Dunlap schools, haven't released for Spring Break yet.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is preparing for a record number of travelers this Spring Break, an estimated 107 million across the country between March 14 and April 28.
"To be honest, this is a good problem to have," Olson said. "We want to be busy. It means we're offering what our travelers need and want. We're happy to find ways to add more parking if it means breaking another record in 2019."
During this busy travel time, TSA offers these tips to keep security lines flowing:
* Follow the 3-1-1 liquids rule: 3.4 ounces or less per container in a quart-size clear plastic, zip-top bag. One per passenger. Place it in a bin for screening.
* Ensure your pockets are empty.
* Remove your shoes and place directly on the X-ray belt.
* Remove all electronic personal devices larger than a cell phone from your carry-on and place them into a bin. (Laptops, tablets, e-readers, etc.)
* Remember to check the bins and collect all your belongings after screening.
